Synopsis
The story is set in Venice and begins with the engagement of Clarice, daughter of Pantalone, and Silvio, made possible by the supposed death of Clarice’s former fiancé, Federico Rasponi. The celebration is interrupted when the servant Truffaldino announces that Federico is actually alive and waiting outside.
In truth, “Federico” is his sister Beatrice in disguise, who has come to Venice to collect a dowry and find her lover, Florindo Aretusi—the man who killed her brother and fled to avoid arrest.
The plot thickens when Truffaldino, eager for food and money, secretly agrees to serve Florindo as well, juggling two masters at the same inn. This double service causes comic chaos, leading Beatrice and Florindo to believe the other is dead, until the misunderstandings are finally resolved.
