In Catalonia and all over Spain there is great devotion to La Mare de Déu del Carme (La Virgen del Carmen in Spanish). She is the protector of mariners.
Sitges Cultural Traditions
The Revetlla de Sant Joan is celebrated all over Catalonia and welcomes the beginning of the summer. In Sitges it also happens to be the fiesta of the Poble Sec neighbourhood and features fireworks, habaneras (Cuban music brought back by sailors in the nineteenth century), fairground attractions, etc.
This aplec or gathering is normally held on the first sunday in June. Mass is held at the Ermita de la Trinitat (Sanctuary of the Holy Trinity in the Garraf natural park) followed by breakfast open to all.
This is a very old celebration that used to bring together all the people who lived in masías (stone farmhouses) and worked the land in this area and it has been reinstated and the gathering takes place in the Masía de Campdàsens in the Parc del Garraf.
