Le Palais Maricel

Rusiñol, Cau Ferrat and the Modernista celebrations attracted many artists to Sitges and brought into vogue the taste for the popular arts, the recovery of the traditional forge and ceramics, and a new decorative style.
North American collector Charles Deering (1852-1927) was also attracted here by this style and the local climate, and decided to build a palace next to the Cau Ferrat in Racó de la Calma as his residence and a museum.
To carry out this work, he commissioned the artist Miquel Utrillo, who had lived with Rusiñol in his early Paris years and whose artistic vision had much in common with his friend.
In 1910, the 14th-century former Hospital de Sant Joan was practically in ruins. On the other side of the square were a number of fisherman’s houses, very modes dwellings as one can see from photographs of the period. Utrillo took part of the medieval building and carried out alteration work on these houses in order to make a single building. A bridge over Carrer Fonollar joins this construction to the corresponding section of the old hospital.

The guided tour of the Palau de Maricel invites you to visit its rooms, learn about its history and admire its collections. Built between 1913 and 1918, the Palau de Maricel is one of the noucentista jewels of Sitges and the itinerary goes through all its corners of this emblematic building: from the Saló d’Or, the Saló Blau, the terraces and the cloister, from where They appreciate privileged views of the Mediterranean.
