Declared the International Day of the Book by UNESCO in 1995, this celebration of books and literature draws its inspiration from a Catalan tradition.
On Sant Jordi loved ones and respected ones exchange gifts. The women give a book and the men give a rose. This festivity is celebrated throughout Catalonia and for sweethearts it is equivalent to Valentines Day, although it also carries an assertive connotation of Catalan culture.
Sitges holds a book fair on Sant Jordi. Stands and tables are set-up on the streets to sell books and roses. Book presentations take place and there is live music and traditional songs.
